Can you imagine? The good guys in power after making a ‘simple mistake’ with their expenses have taken on cocaine?
Traces of cocaine have been found in nine toilets of the British parliament, including in those near MPs’ office where public visitors cannot access.
The traces have been found by undercover reporters of The Sun revealing widespread drugs use in the British houses of parliament.
The findings when considered in the context of strict airport style security checks before anyone can enter the House of Commons and the House of Lords raise speculations that MPs themselves could be those using the drugs.
The paper said its reporters used white powder swabs, used by the police, the prison service and the customs office, to identify the cocaine use.
The traces were found outside Strangers’ Bar, which is a favorite location for MPs and the House of Lords committee corridor as well as exclusive areas near offices of top Liberal Democrat and Conservative MPs in Portcullis House.
This comes as official police reports show security guards have only found drugs in three occasions since 2010 while the seized drugs have been cannabis rather than cocaine.
The revelations have drawn angry reactions including by Conservative MP Douglas Carswell who said the findings show something “rotten” within the British democracy.
“With decadence comes something rotten. It suggests there is something rotten about the institution itself,” he said.
Robert Oxley of the TaxPayers’ Alliance also expressed his concern saying “it’s worrying. Pay is high enough in Westminster without the occupants being high too”.
Britain has the highest number of cocaine users in Europe at over one million users.
